WAYS TO ESTABLISH OWNERSHIP OF LAND: FENCING OF LAND

 Congratulations!!!

We rejoice with you in becoming a new Land Owner.

But, do you know that buying and owning any land in Nigeria does not necessarily give neither does it guarantee your ownership rights and status over such land.

The first step to establishing ownership of land after acquisition and land clearance is by Fencing the actual portion/lot/plot being allocated/allotted. It is the first physical construction activity to be undertaken on the newly acquired land.

Fencing activities on any form of land after acquisition could be undertaken in various forms after great emphasis and consideration on the type of land to be fenced. But, the most recognized and common form of land fencing is through the use of sandcrete blocks made up of sand, cement and water and then moulded into various sizes.

Another way which land can be fenced if it is a swampy or water logged land is through pouring of reinforced concrete on the marked boundary points.

Fencing of land after acquisition is one of the proven ways of establishing one's ownership rights and status on such land.

Other ways of establishing ownership of land are:

  • Land acquisition,allocation and/or allotment documents.
  • Land Survey to determine actual measurement and boundary of the land.
  • Issuance of land certificate.

The other ways of establishing ownership of land as bulleted above will be discussed in our subsequent articles.
